In
May 1954, the United States Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling in
Brown
v. Board of Education stating that racially segregated education was unconstitutional
and therefore illegal. This decision directly challenged the long held belief
that separate schools were acceptable as long as they were equal to each other.
Even with equal schools, the courts ruled that there were still adverse effects
of segregation.
Many connections between the cases of Webb and Brown existed. Several of the
people who had been involved in Webb were also instrumental in the following
