Outta Sight: Technology and Trends in the 1960s and ‘70s
Grades K – 6
Description: What do rocket ships, video games, and the Hustle have in common? They are all part of the Coming of Age in Johnson County: 1960-1976 exhibit! This guided tour highlights the technologies and trends that defined the era. Following the tour, students will participate in craft activities that include constructing a lava lamp and making a love beads bracelet.
Fee: $2 per person. Maximum 90 students.
Schedule: Available November 10, 2007 – August 31, 2008, Tuesday – Friday mornings.

Johnson County: Camelot in Kansas
Grades 7 – 12
Description: President John F. Kennedy’s administration earned the nickname “Camelot” for the idealism and hope that they brought to Americans in the 1960s. Did “Camelot” exist here in Johnson County? Take a guided tour of the exhibit, Coming of Age in Johnson County: 1960-1976, and explore the political, economic, and social issues affecting Johnson County during this era. Following the tour, students will participate in craft activities that include making a political button and constructing a lava lamp.
Fee: $2 per person. Maximum 90 students.

Coming of Age in Johnson County: 1960 -1976 Self-Guided Tour

Grades 1-12
Description: For the country, the county, and the Baby Boomer generation, the 1960’s and 70’s were a rite of passage.  These decades challenged Americans to ask fundamental questions about the way they were living.  What is our nation’s place in the world?  Does everyone deserve equal rights?  What role should the government; both nationally and at the local level, play in our lives?  Is it really a good idea wear a paisley tie with a powder blue polyester leisure suit? Check out this fascinating exhibit to explore how local residents responded to the issues of the times!
Fee:  FREE; Maximum 90 students.
Schedule: Available through August 29, 2008, Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Sunday 1:00 - 4:30 p.m.

Seeking the Good Life Self-Guided Tour
Grades 1-12
Description: This permanent exhibition explores the history behind the ordinary and extraordinary people who have called Johnson County home since 1820. See how they lived, worked, and played on the farms, in the cities, and in the suburbs. Step inside a Shawnee Council House. Experience life on an 1880s farm. Walk into a Strang Line waiting station. See the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air. Self-guided tour comes with a Scavenger Hunt that goes along with the exhibit. Does not include tour of the 1950s All-Electric Model House.
Fee: FREE. Limited to groups of 90.
Schedule: Available year round, Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:30; p.m. Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Special Scout Opportunities

Collector's Workshop
Description: All levels of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can learn how to document, store and care for their own collections. Groups are encouraged to bring examples of their own collections and will receive a collector's kit. This program meets some requirements for Girl Scout and Boy Scout merit badges.
Fee: $1per person. Limited to groups of 30.

In Your Classroom

The One-Room School Trunk
Grades K-3
Description: Based on research for the restoration of Lanesfield School, this traveling trunk explores the one-room school experience circa 1904. The trunk contains slates, slate pencils, a school bell, a tin lunch box and a teacher's manual with information and activities.
Fee: $10/week.

The Overland Trails Trunk
Grades 4-6
Description: This traveling trunk details the overland experience on the Oregon-California and Santa Fe Trails by using reproduction artifacts, photographs, and classroom activities. Included in the trunk is a teacher's manual that provides information and original source materials about the people who went west.
Fee: $10/week.
Schedule: Available year round.

Community History Kits
Grades 6-8
Description: These easy-to-use history kits help bring community history alive. Each kit includes 25 photographs and research materials that highlight significant people, places and events in each community's history. By using the materials provided, students develop research and writing skills and uncover Johnson County's unique place in history.
Kits available: Overland Park, Olathe, De Soto, Gardner/Edgerton, Spring Hill, and NE Johnson County.
Fee: $10/week. Because of the amount of information in each kit, we suggest a two week rental.

Overview of Johnson County History slide program
Grades 1-6
Description: This thirty-minute slide presentation outlines the history of the county from its beginnings to the present including early Native Americans, trail travel, settlement, agriculture and suburban growth. Slide shows can be given at the school or at the Museum of History.
Fee: $25/presentation. Limit of three classrooms for each presentation.
