Between 1991 and 1999, pre-1950 structures in Johnson County were identified and surveyed by the Johnson County Museum. This survey was part of a larger project to document historic architectural resources in the state of Kansas, funded by a historic preservation survey grant from the National Park Service, United States Department of the Interior and administered by the Kansas Historic Preservation Department.

A survey of these resources contributes to understanding of the county's history and aids in planning to preserve historic structures. This survey includes residences, commercial buildings, barns, outbuildings and bridges. Volunteer surveyors recorded information about location of structures, their architectural style and form, construction materials and techniques. Each structure was photographed and all the information was entered into a database. A final report, analyzing the built environment in Johnson County, is currently being prepared. The full report will be available on this website when complete. From these surveys, significant structures are nominated for the Kansas and National Registers of Historic Places.
