At night, camped on a bright beautiful stream… This evening, one monsieur wolf and I gave each other a mutual scare. He, however, tucked his tail between his legs, and put off at a great rate of speed. Had I been able, I have no doubt I should have done the same thing, tail and all.

To avoid crossing several creeks, emigrants on the Oregon-California Trail headed north from the junction of the trails to Captain’s Creek.

Diaries and journals describe emigrants recording their names on a rock located on the campgrounds of Captain’s Creek. No trace of that rock is found today.
