The collections at the Johnson County Museum started with the efforts of the Shawnee Indian Mission Historical Society, founded in 1930 to support the preservation of the Shawnee Indian Mission in Fairway, KS. The society members were soon gathering items of historical interest to Johnson County’s history and sought to establish a county history museum. In 1967, with the financial support of the Johnson County Commission, the Johnson County Historical Museum opened.

collection imagesEarly collecting was volunteer-driven and focused on the period of early white settlement, between the years 1880-1920. Since the mid-1980s, collecting has been more focused on documenting and collecting known gaps and the modern era from the mid-20th century through the present.

Today’s collection includes over 15,500 objects, 280 cubic feet of archival materials, and over 558,000 photographs and negatives. Many of those images are accessible online. If you have an item you would like to donate, please call 913-715-2550 or contact us to make an appointment.
