Living History Program
Grades 4-5 Description: In this four-hour program, students experience 1904 one-room school lessons in the restored Lanesfield School. Students spend three hours in the classroom where they use slates and copybook, and recite their lessons to a schoolteacher. At morning's end, the "noon hour" provides a time for dinner as well as games and stories from the turn-of-the-century.
Fee: $5 per person. Limited to groups of 30. Pre-visit materials provided.
Schedule: September - November and January - May. Monday - Thursday mornings.

Grades K-3
Description: This one-hour program highlights a turn-of-the-century day on the farm. Children learn about farm life, do chores, and enjoy lessons in the one-room school led by a costumed teacher. As a pre-visit activity, we suggest using the One-Room School Trunk available at the Museum of History. Reservations are required for this program.
Fee: $2 per person. Limited to groups of 60.

Trails, Rails, and Dinner Pails
Grades 4-6
Description: This one-hour program features the history of the site, including the Santa Fe Trail, the Battle of Bull Creek and the ghost town of Lanesfield. Children participate in activities about the trails and a costumed teacher conducts lessons in the restored one-room school. Reservations are required for this program.
Fee: $2 per person. Limited to groups of 60.

School Days and Railways
Grades K-6
Description: All aboard! Explore the importance of the railroad system with this two and one-half hour program. The historic journey begins with lessons at the Lanesfield School Historic Site and continues on to the
Midland Railway in Baldwin City where groups take a one-hour train ride to the ghost town of Norwood. Reservations are required for this program.
Fee: $6 per person. Minimum of 30 participants required.

Lanesfield School Tour
Grades 1-12

Special Scout Opportunities
From the One-Room School to You
Description: Webelos can earn requirements for the Scholar badge in a one-hour program given by a costumed teacher in the restored schoolhouse. Webelos learn about the development of education in Kansas, especially the important role of the one-room school by practicing lessons in penmanship and arithmetic.
Fee: $2 per person. Limited to groups of 30.

Description: Brownies working on Listening to the Past badges can earn requirements while attending a one-hour program. Brownies learn about daily rural life at the turn-of-the-century. What children wore, what kinds of chores children did, and what games children played are presented by a costumed teacher. In addition, the teacher gives turn-of-the-century lessons in the schoolhouse.
Fee: $2 per person. Limited to groups of 30.

In Your Classroom
The One-Room School Trunk
Grades K-3
Description: Based on research for the restoration of Lanesfield School, this traveling trunk explores the one-room school experience circa 1904. The trunk contains slates, slate pencils, a school bell, a tin lunch box and a teacher's manual with information and activities.
Fee: $10/week.
Schedule: Available year round.

Grades 4-6
Description: This traveling trunk details the overland experience on the Oregon-California and Santa Fe Trails by using reproduction artifacts, photographs, and classroom activities. Included in the trunk is a teacher's manual that provides information and original source materials about the people who went west.
Fee: $10/week.
