education image The Museum offers structured programs and self-guided opportunities to tour the three museum sites: Johnson County Museum, the 1950s All Electric House, and the Lanesfield School. A small fee is charged for the staff-led programs.

Seeking the Good Life: Self-Guided Tour
Grades: Kindergarten – Twelfth
Description: This exhibition explores the Johnson County’s history and its transformation from a group of rural farming communities to today’s suburban cities. Learn about the ordinary and extraordinary people who have shaped our communities since 1820. Experience life on an 1880s farm. Learn about the Border War between Kansas and Missouri. Create your own 1930s radio show. Explore transportation modes including the impact of the automobile in our 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air. Self-guided tour includes a Scavenger Hunt activity.
Fee: FREE!
Schedule: Available year round, Tuesday - Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The 1950s All-Electric House: Guided Tour
Grades: Kindergarten – Twelfth
Description: With a costumed 1950s host as a guide, visitors will experience first hand cutting edge technologies from the 50s --- moonglow light fixtures, waist high outlets, dishwasher, and a central air conditioner. Come see what made it the “House of the Future” and a piece of the American Dream for many!
Fee: $2 per student. Free admission for teachers and adult.
Schedule: Available year round, Tuesday - Friday mornings; 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

KidScape Exhibit Programs
Grades: Kindergarten – Third
Description: Take a guided tour of the exhibit KidScape and learn all about community! Compare and contrast rural, suburban, and urban communities. Describe the goods and services communities provide their citizens. Learn about Johnson County residents, past and present, who made contributions in their community. Explain community in terms of wants and needs. What do communities need in order to function? What do communities want in order to be desirable places to live? Students will answer these questions and more as they explore KidScape and participate in a hands-on activity about community.
Fee: $2 per student. Free admission for teachers and adult chaperones.
Schedule: Programs are available Tuesday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Lanesfield Living History Program
Grades: Fourth – Fifth
Description: In this four-hour program, students experience 1904 one-room school lessons in the restored schoolhouse. Students spend three hours in the classroom where they use slates and copybook, and recite their lessons to a costumed schoolteacher. At morning's end, the "noon hour" provides a time for dinner as well as games and stories from the turn of the 20th century.
Fee: $5 per person. Limited to groups of 30.

Lanesfield Farm Family Program
Grades: Kindergarten – Third
Description: This one-hour program highlights an early 20th century farm day. Children learn about farm life, do chores, and enjoy lessons in the one-room school led by a costumed schoolteacher.
Fee: $2 per person. Limited to groups of 60.
Schedule: Available on Friday mornings; 9:30 or 11:00 a.m.
